Measure Like a Pro: Will It Actually Fit?

Falling in love with a pre‑loved piece is easy. Getting it through your front door? That’s where things can go sideways — literally.
A couple of quick measurements now =

Here’s the simple, no‑math way to know it’ll fit.
🧡 1) Start where the piece will live
Before doors and stairs, measure the actual spot you’re planning for:
- Measure width, depth, and height of the space.
- Mark the footprint on the floor with painter’s tape or newspaper.
- Leave 8–10 cm around it for airflow, cables, and baseboards.
- Watch for radiators, vents, outlets, window handles stealing space.
If the taped outline already feels cramped, the real piece will feel cramped‑plus.
🚪 2) Measure the path: doorways, halls, stairs, elevators
Now trace the journey from the truck to that taped outline:
- Front door: clear width and height (inside the frame; mind the handles).
- Interior doors: every one the piece will pass through.
- Hallways: measure the narrowest width.
- Stairs: stair width and landing depth.
- Elevators: door width, inside depth, and height.
Write down the smallest number you find. That’s your “boss level” clearance.
📐 3) Find the diagonal (the easy way — no formulas)
For sofas, tall dressers, bookshelves, and wardrobes, the important number is often the diagonal — how “thick” the piece is when you tilt it.
Do it the Deja Décor way:
- Stand at the side of the piece (or check the listing diagram if we’ve added one).
- Put your tape on the top back corner.
- Pull it straight down to the front bottom corner.
That number = your diagonal depth.
Now compare:
- If your diagonal is smaller than your narrowest doorway/hallway width → it can tilt through.
- If it’s bigger → that piece is not making it, no matter how optimistic you feel.
👉 Skip the square roots. Your measuring tape did the math already. Your Grade 10 teacher never has to know.
⛓️ 4) Watch the trouble spots
Numbers are one thing; real life is another. Double‑check:
- Tight turns at the top or bottom of stairs
- Low ceilings or bulkheads on landings
- Handrails and wall‑mounted heaters
- Hanging lights that dip into the path
