Measure Like a Pro: Will It Actually Fit?
Because nothing kills the vibe faster than a sofa stuck in the stairwell.
Falling in love with a pre‑loved piece is easy. Getting it through your front door? That’s where things can go sideways — literally.
A couple of quick measurements now =
no stuck sofas, no scraped walls, and a piece that actually gets to live its best second life in your space.
Here’s the simple, no‑math way to know it’ll fit.
🧡 1) Start where the piece will live
Before doors and stairs, measure the actual spot you’re planning for:
- Measure width, depth, and height of the space.
- Mark the footprint on the floor with painter’s tape or newspaper.
- Leave 8–10 cm around it for airflow, cables, and baseboards.
- Watch for radiators, vents, outlets, window handles stealing space.
If the taped outline already feels cramped, the real piece will feel cramped‑plus.
🚪 2) Measure the path: doorways, halls, stairs, elevators
Now trace the journey from the truck to that taped outline:
- Front door: clear width and height (inside the frame; mind the handles).
- Interior doors: every one the piece will pass through.
- Hallways: measure the narrowest width.
- Stairs: stair width and landing depth.
- Elevators: door width, inside depth, and height.
Write down the smallest number you find. That’s your “boss level” clearance.
📐 3) Find the diagonal (the easy way — no formulas)
For sofas, tall dressers, bookshelves, and wardrobes, the important number is often the diagonal — how “thick” the piece is when you tilt it.
Do it the Deja Décor way:
- Stand at the side of the piece (or check the listing diagram if we’ve added one).
- Put your tape on the top back corner.
- Pull it straight down to the front bottom corner.
That number = your diagonal depth.
Now compare:
- If your diagonal is smaller than your narrowest doorway/hallway width → it can tilt through.
- If it’s bigger → that piece is not making it, no matter how optimistic you feel.
👉 Skip the square roots. Your measuring tape did the math already. Your Grade 10 teacher never has to know.
⛓️ 4) Watch the trouble spots
Numbers are one thing; real life is another. Double‑check:
- Tight turns at the top or bottom of stairs
- Low ceilings or bulkheads on landings
- Handrails and wall‑mounted heaters
- Hanging lights that dip into the path
If you feel squeezed walking the route, imagine doing it while carrying a sectional.
📱 5) Team up with AR (optional, but fun)
Our “Try It Digitally” AR viewer is your visual sidekick.
- Drop the piece into your room at true scale.
- Walk around it to test flow: can you still open doors, drawers, and windows?
- Screenshot different times of day to see how it plays with your light.
AR is perfect for how it looks and moves.
Your tape measure is still boss for what actually fits through the building.
🚚 6) Prep for delivery day (with 49van)
Once you’ve measured and ordered, 49van’s pro crews handle the heavy lifting.
Make it easy for them (and your walls):
- Clear rugs, shoes, and small furniture from the path.
- Protect delicate walls with towels or blankets if you’re nervous.
- If the listing notes removable legs/backs, pop them off ahead of time and bag the hardware.
You relax. They navigate the corners.
💚 7) Why we care this much about measuring
When a piece doesn’t fit:
- It’s extra trips for crews.
- It’s more emissions.
- And a great piece is stuck in furniture limbo instead of living its second life.
A few minutes with a measuring tape protects your time, your walls, and the planet.
“Measure once, rescue forever.”
