Falling in love with a pre‑loved piece is easy. Getting it through your front door? That’s where things can go sideways — literally.
A few careful measurements now can help spot a tight fit before delivery day. Check the furniture, its destination and every turn in between.
Here’s a practical measuring checklist. No single measurement guarantees that a piece will fit.
🧡 1) Start where the piece will live
Before doors and stairs, measure the actual spot you’re planning for:
- Measure width, depth, and height of the space.
- Mark the footprint on the floor with painter’s tape or newspaper.
- Leave 8–10 cm around it for airflow, cables, and baseboards.
- Watch for radiators, vents, outlets, window handles stealing space.
If the taped outline already feels cramped, the real piece will feel cramped‑plus.
🚪 2) Measure the path: doorways, halls, stairs, elevators
Now trace the journey from the truck to that taped outline:
- Front door: clear width and height (inside the frame; mind the handles).
- Interior doors: every one the piece will pass through.
- Hallways: measure the narrowest width.
- Stairs: stair width and landing depth.
- Elevators: door width, inside depth, and height.
Record each opening’s width and height, plus the depth and turning space at corners, landings and elevators. The narrowest point matters, but it is only part of the route.
📐 3) Check the whole shape, not one diagonal
Ask for the item’s width, depth and height, plus any fixed protrusions. For a tight route, photos and a sketch with dimensions can help 49Van assess the job.
A diagonal alone cannot tell you whether a sofa will fit: the shape, angle, turning space, overhead clearance and safe handling all matter. Do not tilt or lift a heavy item yourself to test a theory.

- Handrails and wall‑mounted heaters
- Hanging lights that dip into the path
If you feel squeezed walking the route, imagine doing it while carrying a sectional.

Use painter’s tape or newspaper to mark the furniture footprint. Open nearby doors and drawers, check your walking route and leave the clearances the item needs.
